Packing is the part of moving everyone underestimates. The couch is one decision; the kitchen is hundreds of small ones, and they all have to happen before the truck arrives. Plates travel on edge, not flat, with paper between every piece: that's how your grandmother's china made it through the last fifty years, and it's how it makes it through Thursday. Glasses get wrapped one at a time and never share a layer with anything heavier. Books go in small boxes so every box stays carryable, and towels and linens pad the gaps. Mirrors and framed pieces come off the wall, get corner-padded and wrapped face-in on the spot, not out on the truck.
Every box is labelled with the room it came from and what's inside, and anything fragile is marked so nothing gets stacked on top of it. None of this is complicated. It's just done properly, box after box, until the place is empty and everything is accounted for.
A galley kitchen in Manhattan holds more than you'd think, and most of it sits above shoulder height. There's rarely a spare room to stage boxes in, so packing order matters: we work room by room and size the boxes to turn a stairwell corner. If you're in a fourth-floor walk-up, everything is packed and weighted so four flights of stairs is just four flights of stairs. The building shapes the packing plan as much as the borough does. We pack the entire home (kitchen, closets, bookshelves, the bathroom cabinet) before anything goes near the truck. Your job is to set aside what travels with you: keys, chargers, documents, the things you'd want on you anyway. Everything else is ours to wrap, box and label. If you'd rather hand over the whole week, this is where full-service moving starts.
Plenty of people are happy to box up their own wardrobe but would rather not face the kitchen. Partial packing means you pick the rooms we handle (usually the kitchen, the breakables and the books) and keep the rest for yourself. Tell us where to draw the line when you get your quote, and we'll price exactly that.
Packing is usually one piece of a bigger week. If you're staying in the city, it folds into your local move in NYC. If some of what you own needs more than paper and wrap (a piano, artwork, antiques), that's specialty moving, and it travels with its own plan. Still working out what you need? If there's a gap between homes, we arrange storage as part of the move. Your things are picked up, stored, and brought back when you're ready.
